Yanagi leads Hawaii again
Yanagi leads Hawaii again
Hilo’s Pono Yanagi closed with the worst of his three rounds at the Junior America’s Cup, but his 4-over 76 on Thursday in Dupont, Washington, was still good enough to lead Team Hawaii, which fell back to 13th.
Yanagi finished tied for 20th in the field of 72 at 6-over.
Oahu’s Remington Hirano (final-round 77, 9-over for 36 holes), Davis Lee (80, 18-over) and Evan Kawai (81, 15-over) also teed up for Hawaii, which finished at 29-over, 32 strokes behind first-place British Columbia.
Dolphins fast at junior swim
The Kona Dolphins made a splash at the junior age group championships last weekend on Oahu.
The swim club finished seventh among the field of 17 — a fine accomplishment with just 10 swimmers.
The team’s efforts were led by 9-year-old Minez-Cruz. Not only did she capture the overall high-point scorer for her 10-and-under age group, she also broke a eight-year old record in the 100-meter freestyle.
The team nearly had another young high-point scorer in Ethan Ng, but the young swimmer missed out on the honor by a single point in the boys 10-and-under division.
Hawaii Island Swimming Club brought home three gold medals: Jessica Chen won the 11-12 50 freestyle, Jeream Estabilio (10U) claimed the 50 breaststroke and Sky Domingo captured the 13-14 100 free.
Chen and Domingo each won a silver medals as well.
Hilo Aquatic Club’s Xochi Gervais won the 11-12 200 free along with a silver and a bronze.
